LIVES WORTH SAVING
GANG INTERVENTION
An Outreach Ministry of Side-By-Side Church International
Two Phases
The course is divided into two phases. Phase One consists of eight two-hour classroom sessions covering a variety of topics including but not limited to: Gangs 101, Mental Health, Substance Abuse, Mediation, Understanding Spiritual Warfare, Encountering Police on The Street, Community Resources, Role Playing and a Final Exam.
When the students pass Phase One they are allowed to participate in Phase Two. This is where the students go into gang neighborhoods with a Team Leader and apply what they were taught in the classroom. This is conducted over a period of four consecutive Saturday nights from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Normally there is a great deal of apprehension on the first Saturday, but the students quickly learn how open the gang members are as the Gang Intervention Workers listen, pray and hug the young men and women. By the fourth Saturday, the Gang Intervention Workers are very bold in approaching everyone and anyone as they have seen first hand how God is working through them to bring hope.
Field Work
Once a volunteer has completed the Gang Intervention course, they are assigned to work with a team of volunteers one Saturday a month from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. These dedicated volunteers walk into gang neighborhoods bringing hope to gang members, their families and the communities that are so often terrorized by gang violence.
Select LWS team members work with the families of gang homicide victims. They are responsible for assisting families with funeral preparations, coordinating with Victim Witness for available financial assistance, and ensuring comfort is provided through local churches.
